Cross Plains is a small Texas town of about 1,000 people located 45 miles east of Abilene via US Highway 36. The town sits where oak woodlands meet prairie in the Cross Timbers region. Most visitors drive south on Highway 36 from Interstate 20, while locals use the same route for trips to Abilene. Cross Plains is the birthplace of Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian, and maintains a museum dedicated to the fantasy writer.
