Cresco, the Howard County seat in northeast Iowa, sits along Highway 9 about 20 miles from the Minnesota border. Most visitors arrive via Highway 9 from Decorah to the east or Highway 139 from the north and south, as the nearest interstate access is 45 miles west. The town serves surrounding farm communities with typical Midwest continental weather. The 1877 limestone courthouse with its prominent clock tower dominates the downtown square.
