Cokedale is a tiny former coal mining town in southeastern Colorado, reached via I-25 south to Highway 160 west, then Highway 12 south through the Cucharas Valley. Most visitors arrive from Denver (200 miles) or Trinidad (15 miles), with the Spanish Peaks providing a dramatic backdrop. The town's main attraction is its collection of preserved stone coke ovens from the early 1900s, beehive-shaped structures that once processed coal for steel production.
