Coaling is a small Alabama city of about 2,600 people located 15 miles southwest of Tuscaloosa via State Route 216. Most visitors arrive from I-20/59 at Exit 71, then drive south about 8 miles. The area features rolling hills with mixed forests and experiences Alabama's typical humid subtropical climate. The town's name comes from its early 1900s coal mining history, and the original 1919 company commissary building still stands today.
