Chugwater is a small ranching town on US Highway 87 between Cheyenne and Casper in southeastern Wyoming. The 228-person community sits at 4,400 feet elevation where Chugwater Creek flows through rolling prairie. Most visitors arrive via US 87 from Cheyenne (45 miles south) or Casper (50 miles north), making it a convenient stop on Wyoming's main north-south route. The town gets its name from the sound buffalo made falling from nearby cliffs into the creek.
