Chewelah is a mountain town of 2,600 people in northeastern Washington, about 45 miles north of Spokane via US Highway 395. It sits in the Colville River valley with forested hills all around and serves as a gateway to Colville National Forest. The town gets real winters with snow, supporting the nearby 49 Degrees North Ski Area. Downtown features the Spokane Tribe's Chewelah Casino, which opened in 1996 and remains a major local employer.
