Cherokee is a small farming town of about 700 people in southeastern Kansas, sitting along US Highway 69 about 12 miles south of Pittsburg. The area features gently rolling prairie dotted with wheat fields and scattered oak groves. Most visitors arrive via US 69 from Pittsburg or State Highway 7 from Columbus to the east, with longer trips connecting through I-44 in Oklahoma about 20 miles south. The town's centerpiece is its striking 1888 red brick courthouse with limestone trim.
