Charleston is a small Arkansas River Valley town of about 2,600 people, located 25 miles east of Fort Smith via Highway 22. The Franklin County seat sits where rolling Ozark foothills meet river bottomland, accessible from I-40 to the south. Most traffic comes from Fort Smith or other River Valley communities, though Highway 22 also connects to Little Rock 90 miles southeast. Charleston hosts an annual Peach Festival celebrating the historic orchards that once made Franklin County Arkansas's peach capital.
