Chariton is a small county seat in south-central Iowa, about 60 miles south of Des Moines along US Highway 34. Most visitors arrive from I-35 via Exit 56 near Osceola, then drive east 20 miles on US 34. The highway connects to Ottumwa and other southern Iowa communities, while Highway 14 runs north-south through town. The 1893 Lucas County Courthouse dominates the skyline with its distinctive Romanesque clock tower.
