Central City is a tiny Black Hills community of 140 people, reached via Highway 385 north from Rapid City through scenic mountain forests. Most visitors use it as a quiet base for exploring Mount Rushmore, Deadwood, and other Black Hills attractions. The town maintains one of Lawrence County's last all-volunteer fire departments.
