Center, the Shelby County seat in East Texas, sits at the crossroads of US 96 and State Highway 7 about 140 miles east of Dallas. The town of 5,300 serves timber country travelers heading between Louisiana and major Texas cities. Most visitors connect through Marshall to the west or use Highway 96 to reach Interstate 10 near Beaumont. The 1885 red brick courthouse with its working clock tower still anchors the town square after nearly 140 years.
