Cavalier is a small farming town of 1,400 people in northeastern North Dakota, eight miles from the Canadian border. Highway 5 runs right through town, connecting to Grand Forks 90 miles southeast and serving as the main route for cross-border traffic to Manitoba. The surrounding area is classic northern plains farmland with wheat and soybean fields. The town's 1917 Carnegie Library remains one of the few still-operating Carnegie libraries in the state.
