Castroville sits 20 miles west of San Antonio along US Highway 90, known as the "Little Alsace of Texas" for its 1840s European settlers. The town serves as a gateway to the Hill Country via State Highway 471 north to Bandera. Most visitors arrive on US 90, the main east-west route connecting San Antonio to Del Rio and the Mexican border. The historic district preserves original Alsatian architecture, including St. Louis Catholic Church with its hand-carved French altarpiece.
