Carterville is a small Missouri city of about 2,000 people located just northeast of Joplin along Highway 171. The town sits in Jasper County's rolling Ozark foothills and connects to Interstate 44 via local highways. Joplin Regional Airport is about 15 miles southwest. The historic Maple Leaf Cemetery from 1876 features elaborate Victorian monuments honoring the area's mining heritage.
