Carlton is a small county seat in eastern Minnesota, 20 miles southwest of Duluth along the St. Louis River. Interstate 35 provides direct access via Exit 239, connecting to Minneapolis-St. Paul and Duluth. Highway 210 runs east-west through town toward Brainerd. The 1922 red brick courthouse serves as both the government center and a distinctive landmark visible from the main highway.
