Carlisle sits along I-81 in Pennsylvania's Cumberland Valley, about 20 miles southwest of Harrisburg. The Pennsylvania Turnpike intersects just south of town, making it easily accessible from major East Coast cities. US Route 11 runs north-south through downtown, while Route 34 heads west to Gettysburg. The city serves as Cumberland County seat and hosts the U.S. Army War College at the historic Carlisle Barracks, operating continuously since 1757.
