Carlin is a small Nevada town on Interstate 80, about 23 miles west of Elko in the high desert. It's a natural stopping point for cross-country travelers and serves local mining operations. The massive Carlin Trend gold mine, one of the world's largest open-pit operations, dominates the local economy and has been extracting gold from the surrounding hills since the 1960s.
