Carbonado is a tiny former coal mining town in Pierce County's Cascade foothills, about an hour southeast of Seattle via SR-410 and SR-165. The 700-person community sits along the Carbon River and serves as a gateway to Mount Rainier National Park. The main street features a restored 1920s schoolhouse that now houses mining artifacts and serves as the community center.
