Carbon is a tiny farming community of 46 people in southwest Iowa's Adams County. Take Highway 34 west from Creston, then head north on county roads to reach this rural settlement surrounded by corn and soybean fields. Most visitors come from nearby Creston or connect via Interstate 80 from Des Moines or Omaha. The town got its name from 19th-century coal mines that once operated beneath the rolling prairie.
