Capitan is a mountain town in south-central New Mexico, sitting at 6,530 feet in Lincoln County. US Highway 380 is the main route, connecting east to Roswell (45 miles) and west to Interstate 25 via San Antonio. State routes lead north to Ruidoso through Lincoln National Forest and south through the Capitan Mountains. The town is famous as the home of Smokey Bear Historical Park, where the original Smokey Bear cub is buried.
