Canyon sits 15 miles south of Amarillo along Interstate 27, making it an easy day trip from the larger city. The town serves as home to West Texas A&M University and provides access to nearby Palo Duro Canyon State Park via State Highway 217. Most visitors arrive on I-27 from either Amarillo or Lubbock, with US Highway 60 providing east-west connections across the Texas Panhandle. The university's Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum is the largest history museum in Texas.
