Cando is the county seat of Towner County in north-central North Dakota, just 20 miles from Canada. US Highway 281 runs right through town, connecting north to the border and south to Devils Lake and Grand Forks. Most visitors arrive via Highway 281 from Devils Lake (45 miles) or Minot (60 miles). The 1905 red brick courthouse downtown is considered one of the finest examples of early courthouse architecture on the northern plains.
