State Route 317 connects east to nearby Panaca and Pioche for day trips. The town sits at 4,400 feet in a remote valley surrounded by rugged mountains. The restored 1923 Union Pacific Railroad Depot, built in Mission Revival style, now serves as city hall and showcases Caliente's heritage as a steam locomotive water stop.
