Calico Rock lies along the White River in Arkansas's Ozark Mountains, accessible via Highway 5 from Little Rock (120 miles south) or Highway 56 from Mountain Home (25 miles east). The scenic drive north on Highway 5 passes through rolling hills before reaching the limestone bluffs and spring-fed waters that attract visitors to this Buffalo National River gateway town. The community gets its name from the striped rock formations along the river that early settlers thought resembled calico fabric.
