Calhan is a small farming town of 620 people sitting on Colorado's eastern plains, about 40 miles northeast of Colorado Springs. Take Highway 94 east from the Springs for the most direct route through ranch country. The town sits at 6,500 feet elevation where the high plains stretch toward Kansas. Calhan hosts an annual Sunflower Festival each August when thousands of acres of sunflowers bloom across the surrounding farmland.
