Cactus Flats is a small desert community in southeastern Arizona's Gila River Valley, about 15 miles northeast of Safford via State Route 191. Most visitors arrive on US 70 from Phoenix (three hours via Globe) or from Tucson via I-10 and US 191 through Willcox. The area sits at 3,000 feet elevation where Sonoran Desert meets grassland. You can still spot stone cairns marking the historic Butterfield Overland Mail route along the valley floor.
