Butternut is a small logging town in northern Wisconsin's Ashland County, surrounded by dense forests along the Flambeau River. US Highway 70 runs directly through town, connecting east to Park Falls (12 miles) and west toward the Twin Cities via US 53. Most visitors arrive from I-94, about 90 miles south, making this a popular stop for those heading to Wisconsin's Northwoods. The historic logging dam on the Flambeau River, visible from the Highway 70 bridge, remains the town's most recognizable landmark from its timber industry days.
