Burns Flat sits along Highway 44 in western Oklahoma's wheat country, about 15 miles south of Interstate 40. Most visitors arrive via I-40 from Oklahoma City (90 miles east) or Amarillo, exiting at Elk City and heading south. The town serves agricultural communities throughout Washita County, with straight roads cutting through endless prairie under big skies. Burns Flat houses Clinton Sherman Airport, a former Air Force base now used for civilian aviation and wind power technician training.
