Burnham is a small industrial city straddling the Illinois-Indiana border, about 25 miles south of Chicago. Interstate 94 runs along its western edge, providing direct access to the city and connecting it to Chicago and Indiana. State Route 83 serves as the main north-south road through town. Most traffic is local commuters or travelers passing through on I-94 between states. The city was once home to a major railroad car manufacturing plant that employed thousands.
