Burgaw, the Pender County seat, sits 30 miles northeast of Wilmington along US Highway 117. This route connects north to Goldsboro and south to the coast, handling most traffic including beachgoers heading to Topsail Island via NC 53. The town of 3,850 serves surrounding farmland and pine forests in North Carolina's coastal plain. Its restored 1920s courthouse square movie theater still shows current films.
