Long-distance visitors typically drive up from Atlanta, while locals use Buford Drive for daily trips to neighboring Suwanee and Sugar Hill. The original downtown lies beneath Lake Lanier's waters, submerged when the Buford Dam created Georgia's most popular recreational lake in 1956.
