Buford sits about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta along I-985, serving as a gateway to Lake Lanier. The city connects easily to the metro area via I-985 and I-85, with State Route 20 providing east-west access through town. Long-distance visitors typically drive up from Atlanta, while locals use Buford Drive for daily trips to neighboring Suwanee and Sugar Hill. The original downtown lies beneath Lake Lanier's waters, submerged when the Buford Dam created Georgia's most popular recreational lake in 1956.
