Buffalo Soapstone is a small Alaska community of about 740 people located 40 miles northeast of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway. The scenic drive takes 45 minutes through mountain valleys, making it a popular route for commuters working in Anchorage. Palmer Municipal Airport sits 15 miles away. The town gets its distinctive name from local soapstone deposits that miners discovered and craftspeople still use today.
