Brownstown is a small farming town in south-central Illinois, reached via US Route 40 and Illinois Route 185. Most visitors arrive from Interstate 70, exiting at Altamont for the 15-mile drive south through corn and soybean country. The town sits in the Kaskaskia River valley with gently rolling hills breaking up the flat prairie. Its most recognizable landmark is the towering concrete grain elevator from the 1950s that still serves local farmers today.
