Brookside is a small city of about 1,600 people located 15 miles northwest of Birmingham via Highway 78. The town sits in the Appalachian foothills with rolling, wooded terrain typical of north-central Alabama. Most visitors arrive from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, about 25 miles away, while locals use Highway 78 for daily commutes to the metro area. The community maintains one of Alabama's few remaining volunteer fire departments that still uses a traditional bell system to call firefighters.
