Bridgeport is a small Illinois city in Lawrence County, reached primarily via Route 1 from Interstate 70 to the north or US Route 50 connections from the south. The town of 1,800 sits along the Embarras River in southeastern Illinois farm country. It's the birthplace of novelist James Jones, who wrote "From Here to Eternity," with a memorial marking his childhood home on South 4th Street.
