Bloomfield is a small city in northwestern New Mexico's high desert, serving as a gateway to the Four Corners region. US Highway 64 runs right through town, connecting it to Farmington 12 miles east and continuing west toward Shiprock. The area sits at 5,400 feet elevation with hot summers and cold winters. Most long-distance travelers use Bloomfield as a stepping stone to reach US 550 for trips to Durango or Albuquerque. The town is home to Salmon Ruins, a remarkably preserved 900-year-old Ancestral Puebloan site with over 300 rooms.
