Blanco lies in the Texas Hill Country along the Blanco River, about 50 miles west of Austin via US 290 and US 281. This small county seat sits where US 281 crosses the river valley, surrounded by limestone hills and spring-fed waters. Most visitors arrive on US 281 from Austin or San Antonio, while State Highway 165 provides an eastern alternative. The 1885 Blanco County Courthouse, one of Texas's oldest continuously operating courthouses, dominates the town square with its Second Empire architecture.
