Black Earth is a small farming community about 20 miles west of Madison via US Highway 14. The town of 1,736 sits in Dane County's rolling agricultural landscape, connected by Highway 78 north to Mazomanie and south to Mount Horeb. Most visitors pass through on US 14 heading to Spring Green or the Wisconsin Dells. The town gets its name from the unusually dark, fertile prairie soil that first attracted settlers to this area.
