Birmingham is Alabama's largest city, sitting at the crossroads of I-20 and I-65 in the Appalachian foothills. Major routes include I-20 to Atlanta, I-65 to Nashville and Montgomery, and US 280 southeast. The airport is 5 miles northeast via I-20/59. The massive blast furnaces at Sloss Furnaces still dominate downtown, remnants of the city's steel-making past.
