Big Piney is a small ranching town of 575 people in western Wyoming's high desert, sitting at 6,800 feet elevation along US Highway 189. The main route connects north to Jackson (85 miles) and south toward Salt Lake City via Rock Springs. Most travelers use US 189 from Interstate 80 or the Jackson area, with State Highway 350 heading west to Idaho. The town recorded Wyoming's coldest temperature at minus 66 degrees in 1933.
