Benicia sits along the Carquinez Strait in Solano County, about 45 minutes northeast of San Francisco via I-680 south from I-80. This waterfront city of 27,000 was California's state capital for 13 months in the 1850s, and visitors can still tour the original State Capitol building with its preserved legislative chambers and period furnishings.
