Benham is a former coal company town tucked into the mountains of southeastern Kentucky near the Virginia line. US Highway 119 is the main route through town, winding north to Whitesburg or south into Virginia through scenic Pound Gap. The community sits in a narrow valley surrounded by forested Appalachian hills, with many original 1910s company houses still visible on the hillsides.
