Beaumont sits at the crossroads of I-10 and US highways 69 and 96 in Southeast Texas, about 85 miles east of Houston. The city serves refinery workers commuting to Port Arthur and weekend travelers heading to Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Jack Brooks Regional Airport lies 10 miles southeast via Highway 124. This is where the Spindletop oil discovery in 1901 launched the modern petroleum industry and the Texas oil boom.
