Battle Ground is a small city in southwest Washington, about 20 miles from Portland via I-5 and State Route 502. Many residents commute south to Portland or nearby Vancouver for work, while others enjoy access to Mount St. Helens recreation areas via SR-503. The town got its name from an 1855 standoff between a territorial governor and Native American chief, though no actual fighting took place.
