Batesland is a tiny South Dakota community of 89 people along US Highway 18 in Oglala Lakota County. Located about 90 miles west of Rapid City via US-18, it sits in rolling grasslands typical of the northern Great Plains. The town serves as the eastern gateway to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, one of the country's largest Native American reservations.
