Barlow is a small farming town in western Kentucky's Ballard County, sitting between the Mississippi and Ohio rivers in the Jackson Purchase region. US Highway 62 runs through town, connecting west to Cairo, Illinois and east to Paducah about 25 miles away. The area features flat agricultural bottomland typical of the river valley, with corn and soybean fields stretching in all directions. Barlow sits in one of Kentucky's few areas west of the Tennessee River, part of the historically isolated Jackson Purchase region.
