Bandera sits 50 miles northwest of San Antonio via Highway 16, winding through Texas Hill Country ranch land. Most visitors drive up from San Antonio, though Austin travelers take Highway 290 west to Highway 165 south. The town rests in a valley along the Medina River, surrounded by limestone hills and live oaks. It calls itself the "Cowboy Capital of the World" and hosts rodeos every Tuesday and Friday night from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
