Bad Axe is the county seat of Huron County in Michigan's Thumb region, serving nearly 3,000 residents amid agricultural farmland. The main route is State Route 53 running north-south, with connections via State Route 46 from the west and State Route 25 from the lakeshore communities. The town gets its distinctive name from a surveyor's 1861 discovery of a broken axe blade embedded in a tree.
