Avinger is a small East Texas town of 351 people, located about 20 miles southwest of Marshall via US 59 and State Highway 155. The town sits in the Piney Woods region, accessible from Dallas via I-20 east to Marshall, then local highways north. Big Cypress Bayou flows directly through downtown, creating the unique sight of dark bayou waters passing under the main street bridge.
