Avera is a tiny farming community of 260 people in Jefferson County, about 15 miles north of Thomson via State Route 17. The town sits among rolling hills, pine forests, and farmland typical of east-central Georgia's agricultural region. Its historic one-room schoolhouse still stands from the early 1900s.
